Xinhua News Agency, Lhasa, October 2 (Reporter Sun Yang) A few days ago, the collection team of the Wildlife Germplasm Bank of Southwest China successfully completed the “Everest Seed Collection 2021” mission, and successfully collected Sumire mustard in the 6200-meter area of ​​Mount Everest. The seeds of plants such as the rat qu, snow rabbit, etc., set the record for the highest elevation of plant seeds collected in my country.

The collection team of the genebank went to Mount Everest twice in August and September this year. It lasted more than 20 days and reached the highest altitude of 6605 meters to conduct plant diversity surveys and collections.

Relying on the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Southwest Wildlife Germplasm Bank of my country is a major scientific and technological infrastructure in China. As of the end of 2020, the genebank has preserved 10,601 species and 85,046 wild plant seeds, laying a foundation for ensuring the safety of my country’s strategic biological resources.
