Chinese Railway Prepares for Surge in Passenger Traffic as Students Return to School after Spring Festival Break

The 2024 Comprehensive Transportation Spring Festival Transport Work Special Class has revealed that February 24 marks the 30th day of the 2024 Spring Festival Transport, with an estimated 169.69 million people expected to travel across regions in China.

Of this total, it is projected that 153.94 million individuals will utilize highways for transportation, including non-commercial passenger car trips on expressways and ordinary national and provincial highways, commercial passenger trips on highways, and waterway transportation. Civil aviation passenger volume is expected to reach 1.91 million.

To accommodate the influx of student passengers returning to school after the Spring Festival break, the Chinese railway sector has announced plans to operate 253 additional student trains from February 24 to March 5. The railway passenger volume on February 24 alone is expected to reach 13.3 million.

Specifically, the operation plan includes running special trains for students traveling to various destinations such as Kashgar, Hotan, Urumqi, Zhengzhou, Shenyang North, Yulin, Guilin, Chaoshan, Zhanjiang West, and more.

In Xinjiang, the railway is gearing up to transport 560,000 student passengers and intends to add 16.5 pairs of trains to meet the surge in demand. Additionally, Wuhan—a city with a significant concentration of universities—anticipates the arrival of 100,000 students, with around 50,000 heading in the direction of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an, among others. The National Railway Wuhan Bureau has scheduled 43 additional trains to accommodate the increase in passenger traffic.
