Prof. Dr. Tony Klein was appointed as a new professor at the Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC) on February 1, 2024 and was now given a ceremonial handover by the Rector of the TUC, Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier, his certificate of appointment. Prof. Dr. Tony Klein heads the professorship “Business Administration – Finance and Banking” at the Faculty of Economics.

About the person: Prof. Dr. Tony Klein

After studying mathematics at the Technical University of Dresden, Tony Klein worked there as a research assistant from 2013 to 2018. During this time, he received his doctorate in 2017 on the subject of “Conditional Variance Modeling of Financial Time Series”. From 2018 to 2024 he worked as Assistant Professor in Finance and later as Associate Professor in Finance at Queen’s University Belfast, Queen’s Business School, UK. He has been leading the finance master’s program there since 2020. In 2022 and 2023 he was a visiting professor at the University of Barcelona at the Institute of Econometrics, Statistics and Applied Economics. Prof. Klein is also an editor at several business journals, including Finance Research Letters and the Journal of Climate Finance.

His research interests include financial market econometrics and machine learning, artificial intelligence in finance, sustainable energy finance, commodity markets and their financialization, and volatility modeling in risk management and portfolio optimization. The areas of sustainable finance and financial technology are also being worked on.

At the TUC, Prof. Klein wants to research the interdisciplinary topics of energy and climate finance, energy raw material markets and the financial perspective on security of supply. Research impulses should also be gained from the everyday and currently omnipresent situations of oil and gas price developments, CO2 pricing and taxation, climate risks and the influence of geopolitical risks on the financial markets. These topics are not only relevant globally, but are also characterized by strong regional differences. These different characteristics within the EU and within the German federal states should play a role in the research profile for regional results. These topics are an integral part of the teaching offered and reflect current global financial developments in a contemporary teaching portfolio.
