Media, throng at the annual ‘King’s Assembly’ event
(ANSA) – CAIRO, MAY 28 – At least 31 people were killed in the state of Rivers, in southern Nigeria, when a crowd broke out in a church where food was distributed. Local police spokeswoman Grace Iringe-Koko said this, explaining that “an investigation is underway”. According to Iringe-Koko “some people showed up early, some got impatient and started pushing, which led to the rush.” It was a much anticipated charity distribution at the religious gathering in Port Harcourt. Today was in fact the fourth annual event in which the King’s Assembly Church wanted to “share free food and other valuables with the public,” writes the website of the Nigerian newspaper The Nation.
An eyewitness reported that the church, after a “night vigil” that began last night, announced to its followers that distribution would begin at nine in the morning. (HANDLE).
