No renewal at Don Carlo, the historic bar in Codroipo closes after 23 years

The lease is terminated. The well-known venue also hosted events and exhibitions. The managers: a hard blow, we gave our all to carry out our project

Codroipo

Last day of opening, today, for the Don Carlo café in Largo San Francesco in Codroipo, the meeting point par excellence of the capital of the Middle Friuli, in particular for young people. The owner of the management, Tiziana Turchetto, together with her husband Massimo, during the 23 years of activity has carried out an intense cultural promotion activity, in particular by enhancing art and music.

“It is not because of Covid restrictions that we close – they say -. There are not even economic reasons behind this forced choice: by registered letter the owners have let us know that they do not intend to renew the lease ». In recent days, the couple has been involved in the dismantling of the interior furnishings (among other luxury custom-built furniture), as desired by the property, which intends to put the entire building up for sale. It is a historic building, between the cathedral and the old prisons, seat in the early twentieth century of the “Society of workers for safety and mutual aid”, as a writing on the top recalls. Later it was the dairy of the legendary “Bepo dal lat”, then a rotisserie with no luck.

Tiziana and Massimo, with great enthusiasm and creativity, made it a free and free art cenacle: every month, during the 23 years of management, an exhibition of visual arts was set up, hosting authors who did not have the economic possibility to pay a seat in the gallery, or little-known painters and sculptors. In the morning and until mid-afternoon bars for all ages, from the elderly struggling to read the newspaper, to groups of visitors to the market on Tuesdays, after mass meeting on Sunday. Afternoon and evening, however, presentation of books, poetry readings, music for young people.

The approval of the patrons, as expressed in the excellent reviews, so now turns into a sorry and incredulous farewell from friends who do nothing but call to say hello and thank you.

“We gave all of ourselves to carry out our project – continue Massimo and Tiziana -, we thought that sooner or later the time would come when we would have to leave, perhaps to a young manager who would continue and innovate what we have created and cultivated in these two decades. This was not the case and we are saddened. In business, becoming too attached to one’s work is a mistake ».

They will not make another Don Carlo elsewhere, «because the copy is never as beautiful as the original – say Massimo and Tiziana, borrowing the words of art -. Rather, we take a break, dedicating ourselves to what we have put a little in the background in recent years, that is, the family ». Even their son, who has always lived at Don Carlo, will miss that “second home”. –
