(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 11 – North Korea has appointed a former nuclear negotiator as the first female foreign minister, according to what was reported by the state media, cited by CNN.

Choe Son Hui, career diplomat, former first deputy foreign minister. she is very close to President Kim Jong Un, she was named during a plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party which took place from 8 to 10 June, under the supervision of the North Korean leader, she writes the state agency Kcna. Born in 1964 in Pyongyang, Choe is the daughter of former North Korean Prime Minister Choe Yong Rim. She first appeared in the media in 1997 as an interpreter for North Korean delegates to the four-party nuclear negotiations with neighboring countries. She was therefore part of the delegation during the six-party talks in the 2000s. She, Choe, played a key role during North Korea’s summits with the United States, at the time of Donald Trump’s presidency. Her statements published in the North Korean state media alternated between the threat of a “nuclear showdown” and offers for dialogue.
