COVAX is an international program under the World Health Organization (WHO) that Western governments fund low-income countries to obtain vaccines.
On Wednesday (September 1), a UNICEF spokesperson stated that the North Korean Ministry of Public Health rejected the batch of vaccines on the grounds that the global supply of vaccines for the Chinese Communist Party virus (new coronavirus, COVID-19) is limited, and the virus in other places The surge requires these Chinese vaccines to be “transferred to severely affected countries.”
But it seems somewhat contradictory that North Korea, a poor country that has no money to buy vaccines, has applied for assistance through COVAX, but has not yet received any vaccines. Earlier this year, COVAX’s plan to ship about 2 million AstraZeneca vaccines faced delays.
The Kim Jong-un regime reported “zero cases” to the World Health Organization, but its borders are still closed. The official media urged citizens to remain vigilant during the anti-epidemic campaign. Kim Jong-un said that the virus outbreak is related to the “survival of the country.”
North Korea’s official media also publicly criticized the vaccine, continuously reporting incidents of vaccinated people in the United States and Europe. In May, North Korea’s main official newspaper stated that “vaccine is not a panacea for all problems.”
The Wall Street Journal reported on September 1 that the Russian Foreign Minister told reporters in July that Moscow had repeatedly proposed to supply Pyongyang with its own vaccines. It is not yet clear whether the King’s regime will accept it.
The United States and South Korea recently discussed possible humanitarian assistance to North Korea, which may include relief measures for the epidemic.
The report of “Hua Ri” also mentioned that health experts familiar with North Korea’s infrastructure said that outsiders are very skeptical of Pyongyang’s “zero diagnosis” claim.
According to the National Security Strategy Institute managed by South Korea’s intelligence services, Pyongyang is unwilling to accept vaccines from China. In the past, many countries have experienced a peak of infection after large-scale vaccination in China, such as Chile, Mongolia, Seychelles, Indonesia and so on.
In May of this year, it was reported that a senior North Korean official died after injecting Chinese medicines, which caused strong dissatisfaction with Kim Jong-un. The authorities immediately demanded hospitals to ban Chinese-made medicines, including virus vaccines.
“Hua Ri” reported that North Korea is still very secretive about the epidemic. In June, Kim Jong-un did not specify what went wrong in the country, but mentioned that the epidemic situation has become serious and reprimanded senior officials for their mistakes.
At present, North Korean official media appeals to citizens to wear masks in public. And to the officials of the inspection and quarantine department, “There can be no concessions or slack in this movement.”
