Pakistani blogger Asad Toor was arrested in the capital Islamabad on Monday evening, his lawyer and Pakistani media reported. The security services accuse the journalist and YouTuber of waging a “malicious campaign” against Supreme Court lawyers. Two of Toor’s lawyers were not allowed to accompany him to his interrogation.

On Friday, the journalist was also briefly detained by a federal police unit specialized in cybercrime.

The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is demanding the journalist’s immediate release. “Pakistani authorities should immediately and unconditionally release Toor and ensure that journalists are not retaliated against for their critical reporting on various institutions, including the judiciary,” CPJ chief Carlos Martinez de la Serna argued.

Toor is one of dozens of journalists in Pakistan who came into the crosshairs of the judiciary because of their critical reporting following the country’s elections. In 2021, his home was stormed by unknown attackers and he himself was tortured after criticizing the army. The blogger’s YouTube channel has more than 160,000 followers.
