VALLO DELLA LUCANIA – The border hospital where the nightmare became reality is now celebrating. It cannot do otherwise, following the contagion curve and that continuous and constant decline in infections which, inevitably, led to the freeing of health facilities of people affected by the infection. The Covid “monster” showed up, for the first time, in the province of Salerno at the “San Luca” of Vallo della Lucania: it was there, in the last days of February 2020, to be led by a young biologist from a hospital in the province of Cremona, returned to Montano Antilia after the explosion of chaos in Lombardy. It was positive: from Vallo, then, she was taken to Cotugno in Naples before recovering and returning to the “virus trenches” down at the end of the first lockdown. A lot has passed since those days of water under the bridges. And the Vallo della Lucania hospital also fought against Covid, facing very difficult battles.
A fight that the main “outpost” of Cilento Healthcare has won: the San Luca is Covid free and from today it will also bar the doors to the ward where so many infected have been assisted. As many as 113 hospitalized since last November, when the Unit was reopened after the “break” last summer, last week. The Covid area of the hospital led by the medical director Adriano De Vita will return to its original function: from today it will again be the Emergency Medicine department. The official communication of the closure of the Covid department arrived last Thursday. “Taking into account the evolution of the health emergency -, the manager De Vita wrote in a note – from June 14 the reactivation of eight emergency medicine beds and the closure of the Covid ward on the second floor of the structure, consisting of three beds for intensive care, four for sub intensive and four for medium and low assistance ». The health director of the “San Luca” also communicated to the hospital managers and employees that “only the spaces and paths dedicated to the management of suspicious patients will remain active. Those who, following a swab, are positive will be transferred to the Covid Hospital in Agropoli, as this hospital no longer has the availability of beds for the management and treatment of infected patients “.
That was enough, therefore, to make Vallo della Lucania and the entire Cilento breathe a big sigh of relief, a territory which, in recent days, has to deal with the escalation of infections recorded in particular in Laurino. A stain that, however, does not cancel an expected goal. Desired. And that also made those “angels” who for months worked in the trench wards, side by side, inside hot suits, exploding with joy, to defeat the “monster”. A photo was enough to represent their satisfaction. The umpteenth image after those arrived from all over the province with nurses and health workers celebrating for the closure of the ward. Salerno, Nocera Inferiore, now Vallo della Lucania. Another sign of hope to say that the battle is (almost) won.
