Pedavena, rabbits and chickens to take care of: this is how the children of the materna discover nature at Grest

The summer activities at the “Ai Caduti” kindergarten are dedicated to the vegetable garden. The little ones grow and harvest the vegetables they will eat for lunch

PEDAVENA. The satisfaction of collecting the products of the “didactic garden” in the Ai Caduti kindergarten lawn, and of bringing to the cooks the ready-made vegetables that end up, raw or cooked, on their plates. This is one of the attractions of the summer Grest running until the end of August at the pedavenese materna.

But the nursery garden is also an educational farm with twenty bunnies, hens and mallards, for which adequate shelter has been created. The children pick up the rabbits and feed the birds, and this is their great expectation for the day that starts at 7.30 am and ends at 5 pm at the Grest.

The initiative of pet therapy and the cultivation of vegetables of all kinds, from potatoes to courgettes and aromatic herbs, came to the mind of the parish priest don Alberto Ganz at the beginning of the year.

The parish priest was able to make use of the contribution of many volunteers who created the artifacts for the animals and enriched the two gardens of the nursery school.

Also this year, like last year when the health emergency raged, some classes of 15 children each with their own animator were activated for the Grest. And in these small classrooms you eat, play and rest, if the activity takes place indoors. But for each week there are other expectations. On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays there is swimming, on Mondays there is an exit with the Ted train and a visit to the city of Feltre. And then, of course, there is the commitment made with animals and flowers and plants to care for.

But already in the spring, for those enrolled in the Ai Caduti kindergarten, a large plot had been obtained on one side where the children, with the guidance of the teachers, planted seedlings and tubers that now become vegetables, and spring flower bulbs. . On the other hand, a small chicken coop had been built with a shelter for hens and chicks and a rabbit hutch, where in the meantime the bunnies were born and weaned.

“Our four sections of children, already as part of the didactic activity, were invited to take care of the animals on a daily basis”, explains Don Alberto, “and the children were able to gain direct experience in caring for animals by becoming familiar with the bunnies . What we have observed is that the children’s approach to the animal and plant world where they feel protagonists, has a very important didactic meaning for their maturity and their growth ».
