Ponte Stretto, debate with the Recovery fund is rekindled

by admin

ROME (ITALPRESS) – Just over three kilometers of sea and a debate on how to cross them that has lasted for decades. Calabria and Sicily have always looked at each other, brushed against each other, reflected in that stretch of sea that is the Strait of Messina. Many workers and commuters move daily from one bank to the other, creating a cultural, social and economic “bridge”, the integration that characterizes these territories. All waiting to know how the Strait will be crossed in the future, if after years of debate the stable connection will be made and if in the meantime the current ones will be strengthened. The bridge over the Strait is “a strategic infrastructure” and “a fundamental priority”, the presidents of the two regions are repeating, the Calabrian Nino Spirlí and the Sicilian Nello Musumeci, who a few weeks ago announced a “joint document to ask for the new Government to restart the project “. “Immediate solutions to speed up the crossing of the Strait see us absolutely available”, specified Musumeci during a meeting with the Minister of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, Enrico Giovannini. However, for the governor, “the high speed to be able to pass from Messina to Reggio Calabria in three minutes remains a fundamental necessity”. The stable connection on the Strait, therefore, has made an impressive return in the national debate, especially in the face of the resources of the Next Generation Eu and the drafting of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. In September 2020, the then minister Paola De Micheli had announced the establishment of a commission to identify the best means by which to connect Sicily and Calabria. “This commission – Matilde Siracusano, deputy of Forza Italia, signatory of an interpellation to the Chamber, explains to Italpress – has become a mystery. The outcome should have come in October, but has not yet been disclosed because, apparently, it’s already there “. For Siracusano, in the absence of the report, there would still be “rumors” according to which the outcome would be “favorable with respect to the need to create a stable and fast connection infrastructure. The only existing project, definitive and can be set up – he adds – is that of the bridge over the Strait, the others had already been rejected earlier “. Even the Webuild group in recent days has relaunched the work, with the CEO Pietro Salini who spoke of the bridge underlining the benefits in terms of employment and the costs for non-construction. Now for the bridge there is also a parliamentary intergroup. “Many parliamentary groups from different camps took part”, highlights Siracusano. “The no – he says – comes from a part of this majority that is resistant to this work because it is ideologically contrary”. However, the crux of the bridge, now, is not only on its feasibility but also on the possibility of including it among the works financed with funds arriving from Europe, due to the timing of construction. “Since this is a strategic infrastructure, inserted in the European corridor – says Siracusano -, I find it hard to believe that Europe, finding the bridge in the Recovery plan, will reject it”.
