Post Covid crisis, more than 1,500 families from Udine are struggling to pay rent

The Municipality has allocated an extraordinary contribution of 420 thousand euros. Barillari: with regional support we will pay for 2 or 3 months

UDINE. There are 1,560 families from Udine who have asked the Municipality for help to pay the rent. And, at the moment (the offices are still working to complete the investigation), those admitted to the contribution based on the requirements of the announcement are 1,460, never so many. In 2019 out of 1,302 applications received financial support in 1,192 and last year 1,370 out of 1,590 requests received.

Obviously, the economic crisis exacerbated by the pandemic and the lockdown periods that have forced many workers to stay at home is aggravating the situation of families, given the closure imposed for security reasons on various activities. “Taking into account the general situation and the difficulties that have affected some categories – says the councilor for social assistance, Giovanni Barillari – we expected a further increase in applications and for this reason, as the Administration, we decided to make the fund available rents this year an extraordinary contribution of just under 420 thousand euros “.

The fund is financed by the Region which in 2019 allocated 1 million and 34 thousand euros and in 2020 1 million and 422 thousand euros. “As for 2021 – explains Barillari – we will only know in November the extent of the regional contribution”. It is therefore impossible, at the moment, to have a certain picture of the amount of aid that will be paid to families in difficulty. “According to a first estimate of the offices – Barillari anticipates – if the Region were to confirm the same budget for this year, thanks to municipal funds, we hope to be able to cover three months instead of two, but – he specifies – these are only projections “. In 2019, the average contribution was 815 euros which had risen to 935 last year.

There was time until May 31 to apply for a grant. The call was aimed at Italian and European citizens and also at foreigners in possession of a long-term residence permit. To be entitled to support, it was also necessary to have a rental contract for a property in Udine and to have resided in Fvg for at least 24 months. As regards the economic requirements, it was necessary to belong to a family unit with an Economic Situation Indicator (Ise) not exceeding 30 thousand euros and to be required to pay a rent equal to or greater than 14% for households with Isee up to € 13,405 (16,000 and 86 for single-member families) or 24% for families with Isee between 13,405 and 20,000 (between 16,086 and 24,000 for people living alone). “The aid is aimed at families in a situation of particular social or economic weakness – explains the commissioner – and in particular for the elderly, young people, singles with dependent minors, disabled people, single-income families or large numbers”.

The rent contribution is not the only support for families in difficulty. An important item is also played by the shopping vouchers, which have grown exponentially also due to the pandemic. During 2020, the Municipality provided for an extraordinary supply of food stamps in favor of 2,419 households for a total cost of approximately 567 thousand euros. From 17 December of last year to January 2021, another 994 applications were paid for a total of 327,800 euros and from 15 March to 16 April another 1,722 vouchers were allocated for 548,900 euros. In total, therefore, from December to today, 2,716 requests were met for 876,700 euros. –
