Premier League: Arsenal-Tottenham – La Gazzetta dello Sport

The Special One could become the first manager of the London club to win all of their first three derbies against the Gunners, who have lost only two of their last 35 matches against Spurs in their stadium.

It’s time for the North London Derby in the Premier League: Tottenham visits Arsenal to continue the run-up to the Premier League and not to give up hoping for a place in the top four. The Spurs in fact come from three consecutive victories in the league (against Burnley, Fulham and Crystal Palace), five considering also the successes against Wolfsberg and Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League: the gap from Chelsea, fourth, is five points, but the men of Mourinho have played one game less than the Blues.

THE MOMENT

On the other hand, there is an Arsenal that is struggling to find continuity of results. In the Europa League there was an important 3-1 victory on Olympiacos in the first leg of the round of 16. But in the Premier League things continue to go wrong: in the last round an away draw against Burnley arrived, only two wins (against Leeds and Leicester) for Arteta’s men in the last seven days of Premier. The north London first leg derby was won 2-0 by Tottenham, with goals from the usual Son and Kane in the first half: Arsenal have not won in five matches against Spurs, considering all competitions (two draws and three defeats), and never made it to six straight games without success against Tottenham.

THE NUMBERS

Not only that: the Spurs have won the last two league matches and have not reached three in a row since October 1974. But the music changes decisively when it comes to direct discount at Arsenal, as in this case: only two defeats for the Gunners in their last 35 home games against Tottenham, in May 1993 and November 2010. Furthermore, Arteta’s men have lost only one of their last seven league matches at Emirates, while Mourinho’s side have won only two of last nine away matches. The total draws between these two teams in the Premier League are 23: only Everton-Liverpool has produced this result several times (24) in the history of the competition. Mourinho could become the first Tottenham manager to win all of his first three derbies against the Gunners.
