Puglia, Emiliano prohibits working in the fields during the hottest hours

by admin

The president of the Puglia Region Michele Emiliano has issued a regional ordinance that prohibits “work in conditions of prolonged exposure to the sun, from 12:30 to 16:00 with immediate effect and until 31 August 2021”. In recent days, a 27-year-old laborer, originally from Mali, died returning home to Brindisi after several hours spent working in the fields. But other deaths, probably also due to the scorching temperatures, occurred in Salento.

The provision is valid throughout the region

The provision concerns the entire regional territory and in particular the areas or areas affected by the carrying out of work in the agricultural sector, limited only to the days in which the risk map indicated on the website www.worklimate.it/scelta-mappa/sole-attivita -high-physical /, referring to workers exposed to the sun with intense physical activity, signals a High level of risk. The provisions of some mayors remain unaffected, such as that of Nardò, which has now issued it for five years, or that of Brindisi “limited to the territorial scope of reference”. Sanctions are foreseen for those who fail to comply with legal obligations. Moreover in Puglia the temperatures except for the weekend are destined to rise dangerously starting from Monday.
