Quarry failed to save the lake wind. The sails of the Alpago can celebrate

The Via Committee said no to the Lastra Consortium which would have beaten the Col Brustolade by altering the profile of Sella Fadalto

ALPAGO. Every day between March and September, just before lunchtime, the wind blows in the Alpago basin. It comes from a breeze that slowly climbs up the plain, climbing up the Fadaldo and then slipping into the Val Lapisina. From here it accelerates and, crossing the saddle, mixes with the currents that descend from the mountains, crosses the Col Brustolade and transforms into a reliable and constant thermal, between 15 and 25 knots, which makes Lake Santa Croce the perfect place. for lovers of sailing sports.

In reality, no one knows the dynamics of the wind in the Santa Croce lake, because it derives from a thermal and orographic acceleration mechanism that mathematical models do not contemplate and this makes it even more fascinating. One thing is certain, however: by modifying the profiles of the Fadalto saddle, the wind that brings enthusiasts from all over the world to Alpago could disappear.

This is how the project for a new quarry, opposed by the Municipality and the residents, was unanimously rejected by the Via Regional Technical Committee. For the sake of completeness, it must be said that the project of the limestone quarry, which would take the name of “Lastra”, also presented several other obstacles, but the long chapter dedicated to the wind in the opinion of the Via Committee certainly represents an exceptional element.

«The intervention», explains the mayor of Alpago, «Umberto Soccal,« would have been carried out between the cemetery of Santa Croce and the former petrol station, near the Alemagna state road where it would have created major access problems. A really strange and I think dangerous exit was also foreseen. They wanted to clear the Col Brustolade hill, an area protected under various environmental aspects, but the most serious element underlined by the Superintendency is that there would also be repercussions in the flow of air that creates our most characteristic wind.

Lake Santa Croce thrives on wind », Soccal underlines,« and even if there are no clear indications on the consequences of the excavation on the thermal, there was the risk of compromising the entire economy of the area ».

Not to mention the dust generated by the extraction of limestone, the traffic of heavy vehicles, the elimination of over 55 thousand square meters of ancient hardwood forest, the disturbance created to wildlife, or the need to move a reservoir and part of it. the public aqueduct.

The no of the Via Regional Technical Committee arrived in mid-May and published by decree of the Environmental Directorate of the Region in June, after the proposer renounced to submit further observations and, except for appeals, the rejection can be considered definitive.

The project was presented in December 2020 by the Lastra Scrl Consortium, consisting of the companies Fassa srl and Grigolin spa as majority shareholders, with the intention of using the limestone extracted from the quarry for the industrial production of lime, mortars and premixed plasters. The floor was divided into two lots. The first, with a five-year horizon, envisaged sdig a ridge strip between 534 and 499 meters above sea level, with trench cultivation for descending horizontal strips. With the second lot it would have reached an altitude of 475 meters above sea level.

Overall, the expected excavation volume in ten years was one million and 62 thousand cubic meters, on an excavation area of 55,500 square meters, with an average annual extraction of approximately 105 thousand cubic meters. Not a large quarry, therefore, inferior to the one already existing a short distance away, the Col delle Vi quarry that the Municipality would like to strengthen even beyond the deadline of 2024.
