Quassolo, another white death: the prosecutor is investigating for manslaughter

by admin

Claudio Giovannino was 51 years old and from Donnas. The small hamlet of Clapey experiences an unreal silence. He worked along the embankment.

QUASSOLO. When they found him, in the ditch dredged to retrieve his body, he still had the brush cutter attached to his body. The Ivrea prosecutor is now investigating the white death of Claudio Giovannino, a 51-year-old worker from Donnas, in the Clapey district. The deputy prosecutor Nicola Camerlingo opened a file for manslaughter, without entering anyone in the register of suspects. “We do not exclude that it was an illness – explains the chief prosecutor Giuseppe Ferrando -, only the hypothesis of manslaughter technically allows us to carry out all the necessary investigations”.

The lunchtime alarm

It was a colleague of Giovannino who raised the alarm. Around lunchtime on Monday 19 July he saw a petrol can near the edge of the canal, but Giovannino was not there. The man worked for the company that cleans the banks of the Edison canal, which goes as far as the Montalto Dora lock. The container with the fuel that was to feed the brush cutter was found in Quassolo, near the border with Borgofranco d’Ivrea. The colleague immediately called for help. “We don’t know exactly when he fell – explains the commander of the Carabinieri of the Company of Ivrea, Lieutenant Colonel Walter Guida -, but as soon as we became aware of his disappearance, we started looking for him”.

The rescue machine was immediately set in motion, hoping to find the man alive in the canal. The firefighters of Ivrea, the carabinieri of Settimo Vittone, the technicians of the Spresal specialized in accidents at work were mobilized. It was necessary to lower the water level. Giovannino’s body emerged in Montalto Dora, where he had been dragged by the current, at 4 pm.

Autopsy arranged

Deputy Prosecutor Nicola Camerlingo read the Spresal report and decided to open the file for manslaughter. He also ordered the autopsy on Giovannino’s corpse, which in the next few days will be essential to clarify whether the man died of an illness before falling into the water, hypothesis initially ventilated, or if he slipped on the embankment – and for what causes – and later died by drowning (in this case, water will be found in his lungs).

The power of attorney will also establish whether all the due precautions for safety at work have been observed. Sure, it is that the 51-year-old is described as an experienced worker, who could hardly have done any imprudence.

Second white death of the year

The Canavese records his second white death this year, after that of Fiorenzo Canonico, 60 years old from Montanaro who was crushed at the Margaritelli di Caluso. Here too there is an investigation for manslaughter in progress which has also seen two entries in the register of suspects, which belong to the Perugia family management that produces railway sleepers. There are many, perhaps too many, workplace accidents that are taking place in this period in the area: only last Friday a 61-year-old painter fell while repainting the walls of a house in Ozegna and was transported in red code to the CTO.

Clapey’s silence

The small hamlet of Clapey fell into an almost unreal silence yesterday after the news of the tragic death of the 1970 class, married with a son, quickly made its way around the village.

News that aroused bewilderment and pain throughout the Donnas community. “It is a family of good people, very reserved, dedicated to work – says a neighbor – Claudio was a hard worker and never spared himself, a respectable man”.

Claudio Giovannino’s life was exactly like this, divided between home and work and the time to share with his wife and son as soon as his commitments allowed him. To add pain and dismay to yesterday, also the death of a retired neighbor of the Giovanninos, who died yesterday morning due to a heart attack.
