Quirinale, Berlusconi renounces the candidacy. “Grateful to the Italians who encouraged me”. Forza Italia: “Dragons remain at Palazzo Chigi”

Silvio Berlusconi will not run for the Colle. The announcement at the beginning of the center-right summit. It started three hours late, and without the Knight. Who entrusted his reflections to a note: “I am grateful to the Italians who encouraged me,” writes the Cavaliere. “Now proceed as soon as possible, I hope there is ample agreement on the name of the new head of state.” And again: “He will work with the leaders of the center for a name of broad consensus.”

This is the crux of today’s busy day. It began with the meeting, unexpectedly summoned by Berlusconi in the early afternoon, with the leaders of Forza Italia before the center-right summit. A meeting from which two novelties had emerged. The first: the unconditional support of all the senior leaders of the party, from ministers to undersecretaries, for Berlusconi’s decision. And then a precise line, indicated by Antonio Tajani: “Forza Italia’s line is that Mario Draghi does not go to the Quirinale, remains at Palazzo Chigi, where he is irremovable, and that there should be no reshuffles or new entries in the government” . Words reaffirmed in a note signed by the Knight himself. “Draghi must complete his work.”
So now it’s up to Salvini and Meloni. As did Salvini himself know. “Berlusconi renders a great service to Italy and to the center-right, which will now have the honor and responsibility of advancing his proposals without vetoes from the left.”
At the Roman meeting, where Maurizio Lupi, Lorenzo Cesa and Giovanni Toti are also present, the Knight did not connect. In his place Antonio Tajani and Licia Ronzulli. But the knots to be resolved, at the top, are also others: the duration of the legislature, for example, on which, according to voices close to the leaders of the coalition, a heated discussion would have arisen.

Berlusconi last act

FRANCESCO OLIVO

After having kept the entire political world in check for weeks, starting with his coalition, after the “days of the squirrel” and the attempt to gather consensus among the parliamentarians of the mixed group to reach the fateful 505 votes necessary for the election to the fourth round, when a qualified majority is no longer needed, Berlusconi finally decided. And he indicated the line to follow to his allies.

Quirinal Game, Francesca Schianchi: “Berlusconi and the most gigantic revenge, here are the obstacles of the former Cav to the Presidency”
