Raw materials alarm for Belluno companies: «Sos layoffs. Autumn can also hold nasty surprises “

by admin

Lorraine Berton, president of Confindustria, looks to the future: “Belluno companies are healthy but we are facing a serious problem”

Belluno. «The costs and supplies of raw materials remain one of the main problems of companies, including those of Belluno. Unfortunately, in the autumn the situation could get worse ». This is the alarm launched by the president of Confindustria Belluno-Dolomiti, Lorraine Berton, from the pages of “Il Corriere delle Alpi”.

Manufacturing is doing so well that, paradoxically, industries don’t need holidays. However, the raw material is missing. What do you foresee for next autumn?

“The signs for the second half of the year are not positive and there may be companies forced to slow down production or even to resort to layoffs due to the lack of supplies of raw materials and components, especially electronics”.

In your opinion, which sectors will suffer more than others?

«The materials are the basis of some of our products of excellence such as eyewear, but the same goes for the cold or mechanical sector. The same electronic components have seen an exponential rise in prices. In construction, all this risks limiting the benefits of the Super bonus by 110 percent, as reported several times by Ance. Not to mention that in our area renovations and energy saving are crucial issues for the development of the mountains ».

How should we intervene immediately?

«The upward spiral must be defused before it becomes a structural problem. Governments must coordinate concrete actions against speculative maneuvers ».

There are companies that are even doing overtime. In September, can we expect more hires?

«For months the specter of mass layoffs has been agitated once the” block “imposed by the first emergency decrees has been skipped. In our province this has not happened: the manufacturing, and not only, is looking for personnel, above all qualified. Many positions remain uncovered: even before the pandemic this was a problem, now the situation is even more complex. There is a lack of technicians, skilled workers but also waiters and staff for accommodation and hotels ».

Prime Minister Draghi said that too few workers are vaccinated. The people of Belluno seem more virtuous. What will be a wise application of the Green pass?

«It is time for responsibility and Confindustria’s proposal is clear: to think together about the Green pass also to enter the factory. It is a question of public health and economic and social stability: we cannot afford another lockdown or even forced absences from the workplace. The prospects for GDP growth are encouraging and we cannot make any false steps ».

There have been the openings of the trade unions. Will this availability change any choices?

«The recent openings of the unions are positive. I hope that the Government will make a clear decision and resolve the current uncertainties about the application of the provisions. Everyone must do his part, without ambiguity or blameworthiness ».

The Belluno entrepreneurs, at all levels, have invited their collaborators to get vaccinated. The results?

«For over a month, the Belluno economic categories have launched an information campaign on the need to get vaccinated. The principle is that – first of all – there must be a cultural and social involvement of the population ».

Let us return to the topic of recruitment. Companies are looking for qualified personnel. Will it be possible to accelerate the training programs of Confindustria Belluno? “We are doing our best. The courses of the Luiss Business School and the activities of the Digital Innovation Hub are proceeding at a fast pace. Mechatronic ITS is likely to become a reality in the fall, not to mention the full operation of Reviviscar, our technical arm in training for the employed and unemployed. We have also carried out important initiatives in guidance policies, in particular thanks to the work of our Youth Group. We entered schools and never stopped, not even during dad. The needs of our companies are known. However, there are still too many prejudices about technical training and there is not an adequate knowledge of ITS, the post-secondary high school technical institutes. There is a long way to go, first of all involving families ».

The tourist season, apart from these weeks in August, is not shining. Is it all because of the weather?

«Uncertainty does not help the economy, especially tourism, and we cannot be satisfied with a Ferragosto done well to say that we are in good health. Getting by with an Olympics at the gates is not the goal. True, the weather did not help: the season started very late also due to bad weather with the snow remaining at low altitudes until the end of June. Effective marketing, development of mobility (I am thinking of the possible interconnections with the Treviso airport in the process of being upgraded), collaboration with the other UNESCO sites of the Region are some of the lines to be pursued. We also hope for a qualitative leap also from the new DMO ».Francesco Dal Mas
