ROUNDUP: Biden and Scholz set an example for Ukraine aid – praise from Merz

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – US President Joe Biden and Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) jointly advocated continued military aid for Ukraine at their meeting in Washington. Both warned on Friday (local time) after their conversation in the White House that new US commitments in Congress would fail. Biden said this amounted to “criminal negligence.” And Scholz also warned: “We shouldn’t talk around it: support from the United States is indispensable when it comes to the question of whether Ukraine will be able to defend its own country.”

Scholz returned to Berlin on Saturday morning. He received rare praise for his trip from opposition leader Friedrich Merz. “It was important to hear that US President Biden and Chancellor Scholz expressed their support for Ukraine so clearly,” said the CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader to “Bild am Sonntag”. “It is also vital for Europe’s freedom and security that Ukraine, which is being attacked by Russia, continues to be supported with equipment, weapons and money.”
