Sardinia, the “white” island fears the assault on second homes

by admin

Not just tests or certificates of negativity for those arriving in Sardinia. In the only “white” region, the pressure on the institutions starts to tighten up those who land on the island. And, in addition to asking for more controls, there are those who think of the Valle D’Aosta model, because the fear is that with arrivals, motivated by the need to reach second homes, there may be a new wave of infections. A further tightening that would add up to the provisions of the ordinance in force. That is, the obligation to register on the portal or app of the Region, a certificate of vaccination or negativity to be presented upon boarding or, alternatively, a swab on disembarkation, a test to undergo within 48 hours or quarantine for 10 days.

Costa Smeralda

The first to raise the problem was the mayor of Arzachena Roberto Ragnedda. In the Municipality of the Costa Smeralda, which has over two thousand second homes, the fear is of an “assault” on the villages of Cannigione, Baja Sardinia, Porto Cervo, Liscia di Vacca. “In this delicate moment – says Ragnedda who is a spokesman for the fear of local administrators – the network of controls at the entrances from the main airports of the island must be infallible, because the risk is very high and we must defend the white zone with all our strength. “. The mayor therefore calls for a “strong sense of responsibility”. “It would be unfair to condemn those who decide to move from the red areas these days to occupy second homes in tourist resorts – argues the mayor -. In this delicate moment, however, the network of controls at the entrances to the major airports on the island must be infallible, because the risk is very high and we must defend the white zone with all our strength “.

The Anci and the Valle d’Aosta model

Emiliano Deiana, regional president of Anci, the association of Italian municipalities, goes further. It also calls for more restrictive measures. “I hope that the Region of Sardinia takes a clear, strong and unified position against the issue and that an ordinance is adopted on the basis of what has already been done by Valle D’Aosta – he says -. The virus moves with people. If people stop in one place, it is easier to check the clusters and not activate new ones ». Not only that: “I think that from a red zone it should be forbidden to move to a white zone except for health and for work (and for those who have already had the vaccine)”. Hence the hope: «In this phase it would be necessary for the Government to make this choice of absolute common sense and perspective its own. We ask the Region of Sardinia to take this position and at the same time strengthen the system of entry controls: vaccinated, people who have undergone a rapid antigen test in ports and airports ”.

Looking at what happened last summer and in the face of the continuous growth, especially in the national scenario, of infections, Deiana continues: “In light of the possibility that I hope that they will be prevented from moving to second homes in Sardinia from the red areas, I think it needs to be reviewed , in the regional ordinance, the provision that they can undergo tests in the 48 hours following entry: they must necessarily undergo the test before departure (if the government hypothesis to allow travel passes). We must defend the white area tooth and nail first of all by improving our behavior because we cannot afford to jeopardize our economy which is based on tourism in this very difficult two-year period 2020-2021 ».

The reactions of politics and mayors

The issue of arrivals to the island also animates the regional political debate. Fdi representatives are calling for a block in arrivals from other regions. The representatives of the 5 Stars also look to the Valle d’Aosta model while the progressives ask for greater controls. For the separatists, the President of the Region should issue an order to block the arrival of travelers from red areas. Second homes is also a sensitive topic in Alghero. And from the municipal administration, especially to avoid an uncontrolled assault by residents in red areas, it trusts in the controls for those who land on the island by ship or plane. “Controls – clarified by the Municipality – that must ascertain the reasons for the move and the health aspects with a certificate of vaccination or swab, or with a swab carried out in the port or airport”. From Carloforte, an island on the island in south-western Sardinia with 5 thousand second homes, a message goes out in which it is said that the town “is ready to welcome tourists for Easter and in compliance with the regulations”.
