Formation flight, this should be the largest number of J-20 exhibited by the CCP army. According to some media, the CCP currently has 150 J-20s. If this is the case, wouldn’t it be better for 100 J-20s to fly across Tiananmen Square at the same time? There is no need to use helicopters to make the number 100.
The J-20’s re-participation in performances and party media reports may confirm that these 15 J-20s are almost all the existing assets.
In 2016, the J-20 aircraft made its debut in 2016, claiming to be comparable to the U.S. F-22 or F-35. In November 2018, the J-20 test pilot Li Gang introduced to Xinhua News Agency that the J-20 demonstration aircraft was first flown in 2011 , It took 7 years for the first prototype to fly in 2014, and then to officially install combat troops in 2018.
In August 2019, Sina Military reported that “an aviation brigade in the Eastern Theater District became the first F-20 fighter unit in the Air Force.” “This brigade’Wang Hai Brigade’ will be the first to install F-20 fighters” and predicted “The second J-20 combat brigade is about to debut”, “A large group of an aviation brigade of the Air Force in the northern theater was awarded a strong vanguard…maybe in the near future”, “formed a north-south response with the Wanghai Brigade in the eastern theater. The north of the first island chain is forming a pincer shape.”
On October 1, 2019, five J-20s participated in the military parade in Tiananmen Square. CCTV interview revealed that the first “Wang Hai Brigade” of the J-20 team went to the airport near Beijing and trained for more than two months. At that time there were only 8 J-20s, and the “Wang Hai Brigade” had to be called the “Parade J-20 Squadron”. CCTV also introduced that 8 J-20s lifted off 6 at the same time, and the other 2 were backed up on the ground. The 6 lifted off and 1 air backed up. Only 5 actually appeared in Tiananmen Square. The second J-20 group predicted at that time, the “Pioneer Group” in the northern theater, should still be waiting.
Two years later, on June 18, 2021, the Xinhua News Agency Harbin Station reported that “J-20 fighters lined up in the Air Force’Strong Force Pioneer Flying Brigade'”. The “Pioneer Brigade” waited two years and finally became the second J-20 Brigade of the Chinese Communist Party. The report quoted the person in charge of the relevant departments of the Air Force as saying, “J-20 fighters lined up in the’Wang Hai Brigade’ and the’Strong Army Pioneer Flying Brigade’… to further enhance the Air Force’s comprehensive combat capabilities.”
On July 1, 15 J-20s appeared in Tiananmen Square. According to the backup practice, there may be 3 backups in the air and 6 backups on the ground. The total number should be 24. In July 2020, when the Japanese defense white paper evaluated the CCP’s military strength, it was announced that the CCP’s number of J-20 fighters was 22, but the actual number does not seem to have increased much.
CCTV reported that “in 2019, the 70th anniversary of the National Day military parade, 5 J-20 fighters… and then 15 J-20 fighters will appear in the same frame in the celebration of the centennial of the founding of the party this year… It is an important symbol of the rapid development of the air force’s combat effectiveness.” The report revealed that both the “Wang Hai Brigade” and the “Pioneer Brigade” participated in the performance. One of the pilots, Bai Long, said, “To give you this feeling, it may be that a few more planes have been added. In fact, for us, the difficulty of training is It has multiplied. More training can achieve the kind of complete unity.”
In order for these 15 J-20s to appear at the same time without deviation, it is estimated that the CCP pilots have been training near Beijing for several months. The CCP’s J-20 is inherently limited, but a lot of time is spent on training performances, including Party Day, National Day, and various air shows. How much time is there for actual combat training? It is estimated that when combat readiness is really needed, the aircraft will almost be overhauled or end of life.
