We have grown up (and aged) with an idea of progress that more and more resembles a mummy. We are lost, insecure and nervous, not really a role model for young people. But the girls of Shiva baby (on Mubi) manage to make sense of the mess of contemporaneity. In detail the girls of Shiva baby I’m Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott. The first, 26, wrote and directed her first feature film, taking up the concept of one of her short films from 2018 with the same title. The second, 25, plays Danielle, the protagonist, in both versions of the film.

Danielle participates in the shiva – the wake of the Jewish tradition – for a distant relative who doesn’t even know who she is. In this particular social occasion, in a compressed microcosm, Danielle finds herself having to face and evaluate important aspects of her life, trying among other things to dodge the judgment of adults. A screenplay that never expires in the demented and the magnetic protagonist keep us firmly anchored to the film, but the success of Shiva baby it is not accidental. To realize this, just look at the two short films made previously by Emma Seligman, Void (2017) and indeed Shiva baby (2018).

Somehow the difficulty of getting out of the impasse in which we have slipped the youngest is also the theme of Run, by Aneesh Ghaganty. We are talking about a thriller, and therefore the quagmire in which the young Chloe sinks is much more threatening than the one in which Danielle flounders. Sarah Paulson (more disturbing here than in Ratched) plays Diane, the loving mother of an unfortunate teenager, Chloe, who leads a relatively peaceful life given the fact that she suffers from several chronic diseases (diabetes, asthma, leg paresis, heart arrhythmia and more). Obviously nothing is as it seems and it soon becomes clear that even the mother has some problems. Magnificent Kiera Allen in the role of Chloe: she is the 23-year-old debut actress – in reality confined to a wheelchair like her character – to take us on her shoulders and carry us to the end of Run.
