Boom infections on the island, 1,681 cases in 24 hours
There is still a boom in infections in Sicily, where in the last 24 hours there are a total of 1,681, out of 22,589 swabs processed, the new cases of Covid-19. The current positives rise to 26,525, with an incidence rising to 7.4%. The data is contained in the daily bulletin of the Ministry of Health, from which it emerges that in a single day the healed were 1,255, while the 11 victims reported today concern deaths registered in the previous days (3 yesterday, 7 on 25 August, 1 on 24 August). Of the current positives, 778 patients are hospitalized with symptoms, while 103 patients are in intensive care. This is the breakdown of the new cases on a provincial basis: 329 in Palermo, 353 in Catania, 18 in Messina, 308 in Ragusa, 126 in Trapani, 233 in Syracuse, 94 in Caltanissetta, 133 in Agrigento and 87 in Enna.

Based on the evidence elaborated by the Higher Institute of Health, as vaccination coverage increases, the incidence per 100,000 inhabitants tends to decrease on average. The ISS, which reconstructs the relationship based on the proportion of people vaccinated with the double dose, also underlines that it is necessary, however, to highlight that the reported results do not consider several factors that could have an influence on the effect of vaccination coverage on the incidence of infections as they are not evenly distributed on the Italian territory, such as mobility due to summer holidays. “Probably, Regions such as Sicily and Sardinia are characterized by a greater tourist influx than Lazio and Lombardy, where, on the contrary, in metropolitan areas the population is reduced in the summer months to move to holiday resorts”, reads the report . The graph shows that Sicily is the region with the highest incidence and the lowest vaccination coverage, followed by Sardinia and Tuscany. In the group of Regions with the lowest incidence and the highest shares of vaccinated there is Molise and Lombardy.
