Sicily with infections still on the rise is now asking the government to vaccinate

by admin

The key points

  • The scenario of further downgrading
  • The commissioner: the issue of vaccination obligation is a priority for the Government
  • Boom infections on the island, 1,681 cases in 24 hours
  • Iss: higher incidence in less immunized regions
  • Free swabs at Linate, Malpensa and Orio al Serio

It is not the reappearance of the yellow in Sicily that keeps the regional authorities on their toes. The appeals of the last few hours hide the fear of an infection trend that risks going out of control, putting a strain on the resilience of health facilities. According to the weekly monitoring of the Higher Institute of Health and the Ministry of Health, ten regions and autonomous provinces are classified as moderate risk, but the island is the only one “with a high probability of progression”. And in the North there is mobilization with ad hoc initiatives to limit the consequences of the counter-exodus from the most popular holiday destinations

The scenario of further downgrading

Essentially, for now, outdoor masks and the limit of four people in the restaurant are back if they do not live together. But the shadow of a further passage of the level is alarming for the potential consequences on the productive sectors and the resumption of school activities. It is above all the limited adherence to the vaccination campaign to animate the reaction of President Nello Musumeci, convinced that one can no longer “suffer the selfishness of a minority and the hypocrisy of some politician in search of easy consensus”. Final words as proof of the growing concern. «I expect Sicilians not vaccinated against Covid to feel the priority of carrying out this civic duty. What else needs to happen for them to be convinced? If almost all the unvaccinated go to the intensive care of our hospitals, do you want to finally become aware of the need to protect yourself? ».

The commissioner: the issue of vaccination obligation is a priority for the Government

A solicitation contained even more explicitly in the words of the regional councilor for health, Ruggero Razza. I am the father of a 4 month old baby, on the sixtieth day I took my son to get the compulsory vaccines; I do not understand why unaware minorities should affect the lives of the vast majority of citizens. It is a problem that the national government will have to take as a priority ».

Boom infections on the island, 1,681 cases in 24 hours

There is still a boom in infections in Sicily, where in the last 24 hours there are a total of 1,681, out of 22,589 swabs processed, the new cases of Covid-19. The current positives rise to 26,525, with an incidence rising to 7.4%. The data is contained in the daily bulletin of the Ministry of Health, from which it emerges that in a single day the healed were 1,255, while the 11 victims reported today concern deaths registered in the previous days (3 yesterday, 7 on 25 August, 1 on 24 August). Of the current positives, 778 patients are hospitalized with symptoms, while 103 patients are in intensive care. This is the breakdown of the new cases on a provincial basis: 329 in Palermo, 353 in Catania, 18 in Messina, 308 in Ragusa, 126 in Trapani, 233 in Syracuse, 94 in Caltanissetta, 133 in Agrigento and 87 in Enna.

Iss: higher incidence in less immunized regions

Based on the evidence elaborated by the Higher Institute of Health, as vaccination coverage increases, the incidence per 100,000 inhabitants tends to decrease on average. The ISS, which reconstructs the relationship based on the proportion of people vaccinated with the double dose, also underlines that it is necessary, however, to highlight that the reported results do not consider several factors that could have an influence on the effect of vaccination coverage on the incidence of infections as they are not evenly distributed on the Italian territory, such as mobility due to summer holidays. “Probably, Regions such as Sicily and Sardinia are characterized by a greater tourist influx than Lazio and Lombardy, where, on the contrary, in metropolitan areas the population is reduced in the summer months to move to holiday resorts”, reads the report . The graph shows that Sicily is the region with the highest incidence and the lowest vaccination coverage, followed by Sardinia and Tuscany. In the group of Regions with the lowest incidence and the highest shares of vaccinated there is Molise and Lombardy.
