Globalization, like liberalism, has its days numbered. It is in an irreversible crisis, now at an end. The pandemic revealed all the limitations and defects of this unsustainable system. But the problems were all pre-existing. Ernesto Galli della Loggia’s analysis, expressed in an editorial in Corriere della Sera entitled “The new and unexpected sovereignty, this is how the national state returns”, is similar to that of many left-wing no-global intellectuals. Only that he provides a right-wing solution, we would say “sovereign”: “Today more than ever it seems necessary to reformulate for the years we have before us an active and all-round propulsive role of the national state and its political will”. What this means in concrete terms is not very clear, but the direction indicated is a recovery of sovereignty that has in the past been ceded downwards (the regions) and upwards (the European Union).
