TREVISO. A pioneer of judo in Italy, the image of judo in Treviso. He died at 91 (he would have turned 92 on 23 August) Berardino De Carlo, for all “the teacher”. And for the capital it means a piece of history not only in sport that goes away.

Because the founder of Judo Treviso, in over 60 years of the association’s life, has seen it pass on its tatami future mayors, doctors, lawyers, journalists. Leafing through the album of the company means reconstructing the family tree of the capital, the social and cultural dynamics.

The mourning of the city

So the master Berardino is crying an important slice of the city, at leastor four generations of Treviso people who have never forgotten that little world made of kimono, tatami, ippon.

And that, with a dip in memories with a high emotional impact, they had relived the recent ones celebrations for 60 years or farewell in 2018 to the glorious headquarters in viale Monte Grappa. Happy to embrace the master Berardino again, with his iron memory and extraordinary vitality.

Over the 90 years, it was always a harbinger of advice for current management (now president of Judo Treviso is his son Enzo) and the incredible passion that continued to tie him to judo did not go unnoticed. The teacher, eighth dan and red and white belt, died yesterday of cardiorespiratory complications following a fracture in the femur. And the news, in a short time, went around Italy: he was loved and known so much.

The son speaks

«Treviso will have baked at least at Judo 200 black belts. His club was the very first of this discipline in Veneto and all those born later were created by his students », emphasizes his son Enzo. Potentine origins, Berardino moved to Treviso in 1958: non-commissioned officer of the Army, he will serve at the Cadorin barracks and then in command of the military district in the Riviera Margherita. «Many did not know it was military», recalls the son, «for everyone he was only ‘the teacher’».

The first kimono

He had worn the kimono for the first time at military school of physical education: love at first sight. So much so that, having landed in the Marca, he immediately sought associates to spread the word of that distant discipline, almost unknown at the time, which has its roots in the Land of the Rising Sun (by the way: Berardino will enjoy the return of the Olympics in Tokyo from up there, homeland of the tatami).

Tempra has a lot to sell, the legendary Menenio Bortolozzi is among the first to believe it: 13 are the founders of Judo Treviso, who writes the first chapter of a legendary book with the foundation of April 1, 1959. The headquarters are at the Verdi gym, then the move to Coni and the former Gil in Città Giardino. But the iconic gymnasium is in viale Monte Grappa, where Judo Treviso remains until 2018 (now it is in Serena middle school).

The society

The company, of which he was the soul before that president and teacher, soon becomes a beacon for the Veneto and beyond.

A bet won in a land devoted primarily to football, cycling and rugby. «When the competitions were still few, he devoted himself body and soul to teaching. That was his world », reiterates Enzo, who with the technical director Alessandro Esposito has collected the legacy of his father’s masterpiece.

The federal committee

From 1981 to 1988, Berardino headed the Veneto Federal Committee, then for two four-year-olds he is national councilor of Fijlkam. In 2001 he was awarded the Coni Golden Star.
