Unvaccinated over 50s is the age group that worries the most. Because it is the one with the greatest risk of hospitalization. And there are still 3.5 million people without even a dose. «An unvaccinated over 70 who becomes infected – he explains Sergio Abrignani, immunologist of the University of Milan and member of the CTS, has a risk of death of 13%, between 60 and 69 years this risk is 4%, between 50 and 59 to 0.5%: in this case it means that one in 200 can’t do it ». This is why the pressure to introduce the vaccination obligation is growing. At least for this age group. And at least in the scientific world.
The pressing for the vaccination obligation
For the over 50s “I would propose the vaccination obligation” says Abrignani, who adds: “I wonder how it is possible that with an infectious disease like Covid that risked destroying our economy and killed 130 thousand people in Italy alone even those who wonder whether it is appropriate or not to get vaccinated ». “If by 15 September we have not exceeded the threshold of 80% of the population that has started the immunization process, we will have to evaluate the possibility of a form of obligation” urges the Undersecretary of Health, Pierpaolo Sileri (who is medical). And he adds: «Someone spoke of over 50, but I would go to protect those over 40. We cannot continue to slow down the ordinary work of hospitals ».

According to Lab24 data, as mentioned, there are 3.5 million over 50s without even a dose of vaccine. They represent 13% of the total reference population. Of these, 1.8 million are in the 50-59 age group; 980 thousand in that 60-69 years; 548 thousand in the 70-79 and 200 thousand over 80. Among the regions, the one with the highest percentage of “no vax” is the Sicily, well above the national average, with 20% of non-immunized over 50s: in all, over 420,000 people. The most virtuous is the Puglia with only 8.3% of people without even a dose.
Son: 80% Italians over 12 vaccinated by 30 September
Meanwhile, the extraordinary commissioner Francesco Figliuolo he assured that “the goal declared in March of vaccinating 80% of the population over 12 years old will be fully completed by 30 September”. Currently the percentage of at least partially protected is 78% while 68.4% are fully vaccinated. If we look at the entire population, 61.6% have completed the vaccination cycle.
If Figliuolo’s predictions are confirmed, the hypothesis of vaccination obligation advanced by some political exponents of Forza Italia such as the Minister of the Public Administration seems to fade. Renato Brunetta (“If vaccination coverage of at least 80% were not achieved, it would be necessary to pass to the mandatory” and the Minister for Regional Affairs Mariastella Gelmini (“If” coverage of 80% of the population were not achieved, I would see no alternative “).
