According to the ranking of urban population, there are 7 megacities in the country, namely Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Tianjin. The number of megacities increased to 14, namely Wuhan, Dongguan, Xi’an, Hangzhou, Foshan, Nanjing, Shenyang, Qingdao, Jinan, Changsha, Harbin, Zhengzhou, Kunming, and Dalian.

Megacities and megacities are an important part of my country’s urban system. After my country’s economic development has entered a new stage of transformation and upgrading in recent years, the driving and leading role of megacities in regions has been increasing.

So what are the current mega and mega cities? After the seventh national census, what changes have been made to the list of mega and mega cities? Recently, the “Statistical Chart of Economic and Social Development: The Basic Situation of Population in Super-large and Megacities in the Seventh National Census” (hereinafter referred to as the “chart”) provided by the National Bureau of Statistics was published in the 18th issue of “Seeking Truth” in 2021. .

According to the seventh national census data, in order of urban population, there are 7 megacities in the country, namely Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Tianjin. The number of megacities increased to 14, namely Wuhan, Dongguan, Xi’an, Hangzhou, Foshan, Nanjing, Shenyang, Qingdao, Jinan, Changsha, Harbin, Zhengzhou, Kunming, and Dalian.

Guangdong has two megacities

The urban population is a measure of the size of the city. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the urban population in the chart refers to the urban permanent population. And the urban area refers to the area under the jurisdiction of the residents committee and other areas to which the actual construction of the district and city government resident is connected in the municipal area and the city without districts, excluding towns and villages.

According to the “Notice on Adjusting the Criteria for Urban Scale Classification” issued by the State Council in November 2014, cities with an urban permanent population of more than 5 million and less than 10 million are megacities; cities with a population of more than 10 million are megacities.

Statistics show that the urban population of the seven megacities is between 10 million and 20 million. Among them, Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen are the top three first-tier cities. The population of Shanghai, which ranks first, is 19.87 million, accounting for about 80% of the city’s total population. As the leading city in the entire Yangtze River Delta region, Shanghai has a large number of multinational companies and financial institutions such as the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The headquarters economy, R&D innovation, etc. are outstanding, and the income of residents has ranked first in the country for many years.

Beijing ranked second with 17.75 million people, and Shenzhen ranked third with 17.44 million people. It is worth noting that after Shenzhen’s GDP surpassed Guangzhou in 2012 to become the third city in the country’s total economic output, the current urban population has also surpassed Guangzhou, becoming the third largest city in the country and the largest city in Guangdong.

Compared with the data in the “2019 Urban Construction Statistical Yearbook” published by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development at the end of 2020, the list of mega cities has increased by one, and it is the sub-provincial city of Chengdu in the southwest. Data from the seventh national census showed that the total permanent population of Chengdu reached 20.938 million. Compared with the sixth national census in 2010, the permanent population increased by 5.8189 million. This increase is second only to the two first-tier cities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou among major cities, and the gap with the second-place Guangzhou is very small. The increase in the population of Chengdu mainly comes from the influx of people from other cities in the province, and is mainly distributed in the main urban area of Chengdu, so the urban population is expanding rapidly.

Judging from the types of the seven megacities, they include the four municipalities directly under the Central Government and the three sub-provincial cities of Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Chengdu. From the perspective of regional distribution, the 7 megacities belong to the four major urban agglomerations. Among them, there are 2 urban agglomerations in the Pearl River Delta, namely Shenzhen and Guangzhou; 1 urban agglomeration in the Yangtze River Delta, namely Shanghai; and two urban agglomerations in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. , Are Beijing and Tianjin; there are also two Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomerations, Chengdu and Chongqing.

If you look at the distribution of provinces, Guangdong, the largest economic province, has the largest number, with Shenzhen and Guangzhou as two megacities. However, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Zhejiang, which rank second, third, and fourth in terms of economic aggregates, have no megacities. Although there is a large gap in regional development in Guangdong Province, and the development gap between the Pearl River Delta and the east and west of Guangdong, Guangdong is home to two first-tier cities and megacities in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. In recent years, as economic development has entered a new normal, central cities and leading cities have played a prominent role in the process of industrial transformation and upgrading. Driven by the two first-tier cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the transformation and upgrading of the Pearl River Delta is at the forefront, which also has a strong magnetic field effect on talents and population.

The 7th Census population data shows that the population of Guangdong has increased by 21.709 million in the past ten years. Accounted for 30% of the national increase. The increase in the number of people in Guangdong is almost the same as the total increase in the three provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shandong.

Peng Peng, executive chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Institutional Reform Research Association, analyzed by China Business News that Guangdong is the province with the largest permanent population, with the largest population inflow, and it is mainly concentrated in the Pearl River Delta. With limited space, it is easy to form a big city. However, while the central city plays an important leading role, it is also necessary to accelerate the development of surrounding small and medium-sized cities to form a reasonable cascade of urban agglomerations. The industrial layout and population distribution will also be more reasonable, which is also conducive to further exerting the role of the central city. , Megacities should radiate and drive the development of more surrounding areas.

In addition, from the perspective of regional distribution, the Pearl River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, and Chengdu-Chongqing have two megacities, while the Yangtze River Delta is the largest and most economically developed city cluster in my country. There is only one megacities in Shanghai. The structure of the triangle urban agglomeration is the biggest difference from the other three urban agglomerations, that is, the small and medium-sized cities in the urban agglomeration are very developed, the city hierarchy system is reasonable, and the structure is clear.

Compared with the four major urban agglomerations, the central region, especially Henan, the most populous province, and the Lianghu and Anhui regions in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, are areas with developed agriculture and densely populated areas. There is currently no megacities. However, this situation will soon change. The urban population of Wuhan, the largest city in central China, has reached 9.95 million people, ranking eighth in the country, only one step away from the threshold of a megacity.

Why Hefei Suzhou was not shortlisted

In addition to megacities, there are 14 cities with urban populations between 5 million and 10 million, which belong to megacities. Among them, compared with the data in the “2019 Urban Construction Statistical Yearbook” of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, five cities have been promoted to the ranks of megacities, namely Foshan, Changsha, Harbin, Kunming and Dalian.

The change in the number is largely related to the changes in the data of major cities after the seventh national census. Among them, Changsha, like Xi’an and Chengdu, is a powerful provincial capital city, and the total population of the city has soared after the Seventh CCP.

Taking Changsha as an example, data shows that the population of Changsha has increased by 3 million in the past ten years, and the total population has exceeded 10 million, reaching 10,047,900. This population increase of more than 3 million will mainly flow into the central urban area. In 2020, the population of Changsha urban area will reach 5.55 million, and it will enter the ranks of megacities.

A similar situation also exists in Kunming. In the past ten years, Kunming has increased by 2.0279 million people, and these populations are also concentrated in the main urban area.

In terms of regional distribution, of the 14 megacities, 6 are from the eastern coastal areas, including 2 in the Pearl River Delta, which are two major manufacturing cities in Dongguan and Foshan, and 2 in the Yangtze River Delta, which are two major economic provinces. The provincial capital cities are Nanjing and Hangzhou; Shandong has two, which are sub-provincial cities Jinan and Qingdao. There are three in the central region, namely Wuhan, Changsha and Zhengzhou, all of which are located on the main artery of the Beijing-Guangzhou line. There are two in the western region, Xi’an and Kunming. There are three in the Northeast, namely Shenyang, Harbin and Dalian, all of which are sub-provincial cities.

Among them, although the economic development of the Northeast has slowed down in recent years, three of the four sub-provincial cities in the Northeast have become megacities. Yi Baozhong, a professor at the Northeast Asian Research Institute of Jilin University, analyzed China Business News that the industrialization and urbanization of the Northeast were early. During the planned economy period before the reform and opening up, the cities in the Northeast developed better than the southeast coast. At that time, these large cities had more heavy industries. , There are many industrial workers, so the scale of the city is relatively large.

Yi Baozhong said that nowadays, the development of Northeast cities has a characteristic, that is, the polarization effect is relatively obvious, the main industries and economic activities are concentrated in a few sub-provincial cities, the economic development of small and medium-sized cities and counties is not so good, and there is more population outflow. .

Of course, the size of the urban population and the rating of the city are also related to the city’s administrative division and statistical caliber. Although cities such as Suzhou, Hefei, and Quanzhou are economically developed and have a large total population in the city, the population of the municipal districts is relatively small. A considerable part of the population is distributed in the counties and cities under their jurisdiction, even if the built-up areas of some counties and cities are already in line with the urban area. They are connected together, but the urban population in these places is not included in the urban population statistics. There are still some agricultural populations in Canada’s jurisdiction, so the urban population size of such cities is also affected.

Among them, the “best prefecture-level city” Suzhou’s GDP ranks sixth in the country, and the total population of the city has reached 12.748 million. However, the total population of Suzhou’s four county-level cities, Kunshan, Zhangjiagang, Changshu, and Taicang, reached 6.0327 million. After deducting these four county-level cities, the population of Suzhou’s district is only 6.715 million. Among the municipal districts, Wujiang District was only removed from the city (county-level city) in 2012. In addition, in February 2001, Wuxian City was abolished, and Wuzhong District and Xiangcheng District of Suzhou City were established. These municipal districts still have a lot of agricultural population. After deducting these parts, the urban resident population of Suzhou City is less than 5 million, and it has not yet reached the megacity standard. A similar situation exists in cities such as Hefei.Return to Sohu to see more
