Christian Brückner, the man suspected of involvement in the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann, did not make any statements in court on Friday. The 47-year-old Brückner must answer for multiple charges of rape and child abuse in Braunschweig, Germany, committed between 2000 and 2017 in Portugal, where McCann also disappeared.

The trial, which is separate from the disappearance case, started last week but was adjourned when Brückner’s lawyer retaliated against one of the jurors. The case continued on Friday with a new juror. At the start of the hearing, Brückner’s lawyer said that his client is invoking his right to remain silent. The lawyer also expressed doubts about the reliability of witnesses and the time period in which the crimes were allegedly committed. According to him, some may have expired.

Brückner has a long criminal record as a sex offender. He is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for the rape of a 72-year-old woman. That happened in 2005 in Praia da Luz, Portugal, the same place where 3-year-old McCann disappeared two years later while on holiday with her parents.

German authorities named Brückner as a suspect in the disappearance case in 2020. He denies all involvement and has never been charged. It has always remained unclear what happened to the girl.
