“The goal declared in March to vaccinate 80% of the population over 12 years will be fully completed by 30 September”. Word of the extraordinary commissioner Francesco Figliuolo. This is still the official goal of the government. Even if the epidemiological situation has been evolving for months. And with the delta variant more contagious and capable of “piercing” the vaccine, even if in a reduced percentage, the awareness in the scientific world is advancing that the bar to prevent the circulation of the virus will probably have to be raised.
Current numbers
But keeping to the official statements, Figliuolo’s goal is within reach. Currently 62.2% of the population has completed the vaccination cycle. Considering only the over 12, subject of the vaccination campaign, the percentage of those at least partially protected with a dose is 78.5% while 69% are fully vaccinated.

Target reachable on schedule
Although vaccinations have dropped considerably, with an average of 225 thousand weekly administrations, at the current rate, according to Lab24’s calculations, it would take 1 month and 5 days to cover 80% of the vaccinable population. The goal would be reached on 30 September 2021. Exactly in line with the government’s forecasts.
Lombardy and Lazio in the lead
But which are the regions ahead, which lead the sprint, and therefore closer to 80 percent? Always based on the elaborations of Lab24 on government data (updated to 25 August), the ranking of vaccinated over 12 on a regional basis is not very different from that drawn up considering the entire population.
In fact, Lombardy and Lazio are always in the lead, with 74 and 73.8 percent vaccinated (double dose or single dose J&J). 6.6 million and 3.8 million people were immunized in the two regions, respectively. The unvaccinated (without even a dose) in Lombardy are 17.9% (1.6 million) while in Lazio they amount to 19.2% (987 thousand). In third place Puglia with 71.9% of over 12 vaccinated (over 2.5 million people).
