The four teenagers who were arrested by the federal police on Sunday morning on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack were attending a concert at the Botanique in Brussels. This was confirmed to our editors.

The federal police raided four addresses on Sunday morning. They arrested four teenagers, between the ages of 15 and 18. The youngest in Ninove in East Flanders, the oldest in Liège. The other two lived in Brussels and Charleroi. From their conversations in an online chat group, it could be concluded that they had been radicalized. There were allegedly discussions about committing a terrorist attack, during which the name ‘Islamic State’ was also mentioned.

It was not immediately clear whether there was really a concrete plan, but the four had already set a date. Because that date was approaching, the court decided to arrest them preventively on Sunday morning.

According to our information, the young people would have planned to commit an attack during a concert in the Botanique in Brussels, where around 300 concerts and 10 exhibitions are organized every year. In the largest room, the Orangerie, there are 650 standing places or 340 seats. Depending on the moment, concerts, films or conferences are organized.

The young people’s plan is reminiscent of the drama that took place in the French Bataclan concert hall on November 13, 2015. Islamic State terrorists then invaded the venue during a concert by the American rock group Eagles of Death Metal and shot at the concertgoers. Ultimately, 90 people were killed and almost 200 injured.
