The 200 signatures collected are not enough, the centuries-old cedar will be felled: in its place a rotunda

CAMPOFORMIDO. The 183 adhesions to the online petition will not save the centenary cedar at the end of Via Roma in Campoformido: the construction of the roundabout is inevitable because the process is too far ahead, as the construction site is already open. The promoter of the initiative, Chiara Candriella, and those who signed the collection of signatures are aware of this. “We want – they say – to avoid this happening, here or elsewhere, in the future”.

On the fate of the majestic plant, the very image of Campoformido, the deputy mayor Christian Romanini promoted an online meeting on Tuesday at 6.30 pm with the expert Andrea Maroè (information at #lavocedicampoformido).

Isidoro Zuliani, creator of the Boschete furlane (created with the mayor Pietro Fontanini) and combative defender of the cedars of the Parco dei caduti in Bressa, also intervenes on the subject: «Citizens liked the roundabout in Via Roma – observes the former administrator -. But everyone cares about the splendid cedar that has welcomed those passing through Udine and Venice for over a hundred years. With a variant in progress, the roundabout could respect the cedar, reduce the speed of vehicles and make pedestrians and cyclists safe ».

Saving the cedar was an electoral workhorse of Mayor Erika Furlani, certainly not insensitive to the environment: yet another test is the planting of 200 honey trees, involving 140 middle school students, on the occasion of the recent World Bee Days and biodiversity. The initiative, part of the “Comune friend of bees” project to which Campoformido adheres, intends to raise awareness of the importance of pollinating insects and stable meadows protected in the municipal area.

The mayor and Romanini, delegate for the environment, are grateful «to the head teacher Elena Venturini, teachers and students, to the Region and to the Pascul nursery in Tarcento for the supply of 200 hawthorn, barberry, dogwood, canine cherry and blackthorn plants. The Proloco di Campoformido and the photographic circle Il wide angle have collaborated. Thanks also to Professor Pietro Zandigiacomo of the University of Udine, who spoke on the protection of stable meadows, and to DJ Tubet who, with the support of Cultura Nuova, involved young people on the subject with his improvisations ».
