Beijing Urban Rail Transit Construction Plan for 2024 Released
10 subway lines under construction and 3 new lines to be opened this year

The “2024 Beijing Urban Rail Transit Construction Plan” was officially released on February 22nd, revealing that 10 rail transit lines are currently under construction in the city, totaling 201.7 kilometers. Additionally, three new subway lines will be launched to the public over the course of the year.

Among the lines set to open this year are the first phases of Metro Line 3, Line 12, and the remaining section of the Changping Line South Extension Phase I. These lines will add approximately 45.3 kilometers to Beijing’s urban rail transit network, surpassing 880 kilometers in total operating mileage.

Line 3, a rail transit trunk line running from east to west, and Line 12, known as the “Underground North Third Ring Road”, are expected to include several transfer stations, greatly improving the city’s rail transit accessibility and easing traffic pressure. The completion of these lines aims to address passenger flow connection problems at key stations throughout Beijing.

Wang Shuai, director of the Planning and Scheduling Department of Beijing Investment Rail Company, reported that over 95% of the civil construction projects for the three new lines have been completed, with the majority now in the track laying and equipment installation stages.

In addition to the lines set for opening this year, Beijing plans to continue construction on 10 more lines, including the Line 17, Pinggu Line, Line 28, Daxing Airport Line north extension, Line 13 capacity expansion and improvement project, and Line 6 south extension. These lines aim to further optimize the city’s traffic structure and improve overall resident travel conditions.

Furthermore, Beijing will fully launch the planning and construction of the third phase of planned routes in 2024. This includes the Line 1 branch project and the first phase of the M101 line, which will promote the implementation of the city’s urban master plan and assist non-capital functions.

The release of the “2024 Beijing Urban Rail Transit Construction Plan” demonstrates the city’s commitment to expanding and improving its public transportation system, aiming to enhance the lives of its residents and ease urban traffic congestion.
