CCTV News: The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, which runs from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in the south, runs through five major water systems including the Haihe River and the Yellow River. It is one of the oldest canals in the world. In the 1970s, some rivers in the northern section of the Yellow River of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal were cut off, which affected their functioning. Today (April 28), with the opening of the control gates in Shandong and Tianjin, the entire Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal flowed through.
After continuous water replenishment, this morning, with the opening of the control gates of the South Canal of the Shandong Sinv Temple Hub and the Tianjin Jiuxuanzha Hub, the entire Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal flowed through. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is a precious living heritage in my country, with a total length of about 1,789 kilometers, of which the total length of the section south of the Yellow River is about 1,082 kilometers. The total length of the river north of the Yellow River is about 707 kilometers. Because the Haihe River Basin where it is located is a resource-scarce area, since the 1970s, the water resources have been declining, and some rivers have been cut off for a long time.
In order to protect and make good use of the Grand Canal, the Ministry of Water Resources launched the water replenishment action of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in 2022. Water replenishment will be carried out in the 707 kilometers north of the river, with an estimated water replenishment volume of 515 million cubic meters. Up to now, a total of 260 million cubic meters of water has been replenished to the north of the Yellow River of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and the plan will continue until the end of May.
Through this water replenishment, it is expected to achieve three goals: first, to reduce groundwater exploitation and replace about 600,000 mu of cultivated land in Tianjin, Hebei and other places for groundwater and irrigation water; second, to replenish groundwater; The recovery of the ecological environment of the canal has accumulated experience for achieving the goal of basically having water in the main sections of the Grand Canal during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period.
