The center-right raises the tone: “From Europe an attack on Italy”. Salvini: “They want to sell us out like Greece”

Spread, war and environmental regulations: for the center-right, “an attack on Italy” is underway. A few hours after the end of the electoral campaign, there are the last rallies and the tones rise a little. The objective of the Lega, but also of Forza Italia and FdI, is the European Central Bank which, with the decision to increase rates, has caused a worrying reaction on the markets.
Salvini in his complaint broadens the field to other European decisions, starting from the environment, and convenes an extraordinary meeting for Monday, the same day in which the results of the administrative offices will be known: “European Central Bank, Commission and Parliament: a attack against Italy ”, say sources of the League announcing the meeting of 13 June. Shortly after, Salvini himself declared in very harsh tones: “Italy is under attack by speculators, bureaucrats and warmongers, we will defend it, with all our strength”, adding then, “the stock market loses 4%, the ECB he says overnight that he will no longer buy government bonds, the spread returns to its highest level for two years now, inflation is approaching 10%. They want to sell off Italy as they did with Greece: an attack on the economic life of our country by Brussels ”.

Also alarmed are the words of Antonio Tajani, coordinator of Forza Italia, but also vice-president of the EPP: «An increase in the spread and falling European stock exchanges. Mrs Lagarde’s choice to raise interest rates penalizes the economy at an already very difficult time for Europe. Now the priorities are to set an EU cap on the price of gas and to bring down energy costs ». Giorgia Meloni appeals to Mario Draghi and the institutions: “Let their voices be heard”.

Critic with the center-right Osvaldo Napoli, deputy of Action: “The president of the ECB could still take a few weeks of time, it is true, before using the lever of the rate hike, that said, but how can a person with a minimum of salt in the head to talk about an attack on Italy? The first attack on government bonds this time started from Italy. More precisely, from the debt that grew out of all proportion in the season before Covid and then the war. Debt affects the spread. If Salvini continues to get in the way of reforms, he is not looking in Brussels or Frankfurt for the causes of our difficulties. He stands in front of the mirror and will find the culprit. And stop being a Martian ».
