The Divine landslide again, traffic hell – breaking latest news

by admin

AMALFI. Amalfi falls back into fear. Another landslide. Center meters beyond. Road blocked, then emergency reopened. Then the alternating one-way street. And then the haywire traffic, and weeks that promise to be very difficult for the “Divina”. At 1.30 pm yesterday, the supporting wall of the staircase that once led to the Cappuccini hotel gave way. Suddenly. A large amount of stones fell for tens of meters before crashing on the highway 163. At the time of the collapse, fortunately, no one was passing along the affected section. The agents of the local police of Amalfi intervened immediately on the spot, who proceeded to delimit the area by closing the vehicular traffic circulation. At the site of the collapse also the firefighters and the technical staff of the Municipality, for all the necessary assessments. Queues both ways: one hell of an afternoon. The workers of the “Fracam” of Praiano, aboard a crane with basket, intervened to scale the bodies in the balance, making the residual part of the wall that delimits the staircase collapse in safety. The workers also cut the dense vegetation, which may have been the cause of the subsidence. The urgent interventions have been prepared by the “Nh Hotel” group, which manages the hotel. The collapse, in fact, took place just above the entrance of the well-known accommodation facility.
The staircase has been out of use for some time, given that access to the hotel – which was once a convent – no longer requires its use, and therefore no one, in the early afternoon of yesterday, was crossing it. Shortly before 6pm, circulation was reopened, albeit with well-established time slots, to try to limit the inconvenience of motorists. In the evening, once all the operations necessary to secure the area have been completed, the alternating one-way street has been set up to regulate vehicular traffic on state road 163. To be determined how long the state road will be “half open”. Bad news for Amalfi, which is preparing to experience an intense summer with the arrival of tourists from all over the world, with the long-awaited restart of the tourism sector after the very difficult months of total blockade caused by Covid. Not being able to count on the state highway in full working order would be difficult. The hope is that a few days will suffice. To establish the timing of the definitive reopening, it is necessary to wait for the analyzes and studies of the technicians, who will establish whether there is a need to carry out other safety measures. An episode that only by chance did not have serious consequences. Unfortunately, situations of this type occur on the Amalfi Coast.
What happened yesterday has nothing to do with the landslide of February 2. In that circumstance the damage was immense. The fact remains that the state road 163 requires safety measures to avoid being hostage to collapses. “The situation is under control – says Mayor Daniele Milano – The event occurred on an interluded scale and fortunately did not cause serious damage”.
