“You don’t need a new secretary, just another one. We need a new PD ». Thus Enrico Letta tweeted last March 14, after having won the leadership of the Democratic Party with the almost unanimous vote of the National Assembly of the party. A hashtag, #IocisonoPD, and the first, clear indication of the new course. “We must be protagonists in values, reformists in method, radicals in behavior”.
A month and a half after that March 14, Enrico Letta is the guest of the new broadcast of the director of La Stampa, Massimo Giannini, “30 minutes to the Massimo”. Half an hour in which to face the hottest political times of the moment: the entrance and the convinced support of the Democratic Party to Mario Draghi’s executive, the daily tensions with Matteo Salvini’s “struggle and government” League and the political challenge more important: to give substance to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, the recipe strongly desired by Prime Minister Draghi to heal Italy from the pandemic, first, and from its historical ailments later with the largest injection of money in republican history.
And again: the new alliance with the 5Stelle Movement after the experience of government in Conte 2 and that “path of rapprochement”, in Letta’s words, “with the Democratic Party that wants to build a new and enlarged center-left”. A path, for now, with obstacles: starting from that, not just, of the administrative elections in October.
The face to face of the PD secretary with Massimo Giannini is a new stage in the format studied by the director of La Stampa to address politics and the economy through its protagonists and to explain the current affairs that concern us, crosses us and changes us.
