The farewell to the two friends overwhelmed and killed by an avalanche: private rites for Federico and Carlo, a Cai event in their memory

UDINE AND CIVIDALE. After the disbelief and pain, the moment has come to say goodbye for Carlo Picotti and Federico Deluisa, the two ski mountaineers who died on Friday 16 April due to an avalanche while descending from the northeast gorge of Jôf Fuart.

There will be no religious funeral for Charles. On Tuesday afternoon, those who want to greet him for the last time can do so by going to the mortuary chapel of the Cividale hospital.

On Wednesday instead (confirmation of date and time is expected for Monday), it will be up to Federico, with a private funeral rite.

So the family decided, also to avoid dangerous gatherings given the pandemic period.

On Sunday 18th, friends and close relatives met at Picotti’s house for a moment of memory.

Andrea Polo, the third excursion companion, also wanted to be there, surviving thanks to his secluded position at the mouth of the gully.

On the other hand, Anny Comello, Federico Deluisa’s girlfriend, did not manage to be present.

The suffering is too great to be able to share it with other people, even if directly involved in the same drama.

Sunday was a moment of great emotion, where Picotti’s immense passion for the mountains was the backdrop to the memories and anecdotes of the people most dear to him.

Carlo’s remains arrived in Cividale on Saturday evening, from Tarvisio. Symbolically escorting him on his last trip, in addition to his family, also a small group of his closest friends, still unable to surrender to the evidence of a tragedy that has torn the local community and not only, because Carlo, either for his professional skills – on the which many place the accent -, either because of his human qualities, he was a well-known and esteemed figure far beyond the borders of the municipality.

The body, as already mentioned, was placed in the mortuary chapel of the city hospital, where on Tuesday, between 14 and 17, it will be possible to pay him the last farewell before burial.

There will therefore be no traditional funeral ceremony, but only remembrance words.

An intervention will be that of Renato Danelone, former president of Somsi in Cividale – whose board includes Carlo’s mother, Elisabetta Rocco, and of which Picotti himself was part – and a great friend of the young man.

“For the community it is a huge loss. An extraordinary man has left, full of quality: if I had to indicate one above all, I would use the term honesty “, declares Danelone, who shared” many moments “with the victim of the accident, united by the common thread of nature.

«It has been said by others, I repeat: it was his element – testifies the exponent of the workers’ society -. A propensity manifested since he was a child, when he preferred to immerse himself in the environment, admire it, study it to the pastimes that usually attract the little ones.

From the human point of view, then, any description would be partial: one had to know him, says those who were familiar with Carlo, to have the perception “of his ability to relate”.

“As soon as the health situation allows it, we will organize a moment in memory of him and Federico, who died with him and also a pillar of our school”, anticipates Paolo Cozzarolo, president of the Cividale section of the Italian Alpine Club, telling of having received the phone calls from Edoardo Fioretti, director of the mountaineering schools of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, and from Giancarlo Del Zotto, former president of the Cai section of Pordenone and former director of the national Cai mountaineering and ski mountaineering schools.
