GORIZIA. Gaetano Valenti died during the night, 76 years old in December, former mayor of Gorizia for two terms. The news spread throughout the city during the presentation of the Forza Italia list, leaving those present, starting with Mayor Rodolfo Ziberna, saddened by the grave loss.
Councilor Silvana Romano gave the sad news which was followed by a minute of silence between the tears of those who knew him and worked with him. Born in Poreč on 23 December 1946, Valenti had been ill for some time but his connection with Istria had led him recently, close to the Day of Remembrance, to participate by giving his own testimony on the exodus.
Exponent of the center-right, with Forza Italia and then the People of Freedom, Valenti was mayor of Gorizia from 1994 to 2002 and, subsequently, regional councilor from 2008 to 2013.
In 1994 he wore the tricolor sash, winning the ballot (with a strong first round with over 42%) against Bruno Crocetti of the center-left, obtaining 57.66% of the votes supported by Forza Italia and the National Alliance. Then the re-election for the second term in 1998 with over 61% of the votes, winning the ballot against Ario Rupeni, after obtaining 48.4% in the first round.
