The gate of the cemetery of Candia broke down: damages for 10 thousand euros

A nasty surprise for municipal administrators

CANDIA CANAVESE. An unfortunate surprise for the municipal administrators of Candia Canavese who on the morning of last Monday 8 November found themselves with one of the two entrance gates of the cemetery, overlooking the provincial road towards the lake, uprooted from the column and therefore from the wall on which it rested. it gave way, collapsing for a few meters and must therefore be restored. A quantifiable damage in about ten thousand euros.

According to an initial reconstruction, the gate could have been demolished by a truck, or in any case a heavy vehicle: the deep tire marks were still clearly visible on the roadside. Mayor Mario Mottino thinks about the maneuver of a truck driver, probably drunk, who after taking the wrong road took advantage of the space in front of the gate to maneuver and return to the center of Candia. When the driver noticed the damage, instead of alerting the police, he fled for fear of being reported.

But the action of a gang of copper thieves cannot be ruled out, who, to enter the cemetery, has seen fit to break through the gate using the vehicle like a ram. Thugs who then fled for fear of being surprised. Furthermore, some bricks of the wall ended up on one of the tombs closest to the entrance, damaging it. The violence of the impact also broke a bin for waste collection.

While waiting for the works to redo the wall, the Municipality has taken steps to secure the secondary entrance that leads to the lower part of the cemetery: a well-kept lawn where the deceased rest in earthen graves. The other entrance, the main one, is located not far away, at the end of a short driveway. «The works – adds the mayor – will have an urgent nature in order not to leave the second access to the cemetery unprotected. Fortunately, the wrought iron gate can be reused ».
