Mayor brings cake with candles, compliance with anti-covid regulations
(ANSA) – PIAZZA ARMERINA, APRIL 16 – The ‘grandmother of Italy’ celebrated her 112 years of life in a room decorated with flowers and balloons. Maria Oliva, whom everyone calls Marietta, immersed herself in the joyful atmosphere that involved the whole of Piazza Armerina, a medieval village in the province of Enna, where she was born on February 16, 1909. One of the first to knock on Maria Oliva’s door, in historic Monte district, was the mayor Nino Catalano who is 76 years younger than his now famous fellow citizen. Catalano brought a cake with the coat of arms of the municipality. In recent days he had presented himself with a bundle of roses.
There was so much participation in what in Piazza Armerina is proudly considered a historic event. But in the home of Nunzia Catalano, the youngest daughter who looks after Maria Oliva, who had eight children, of whom five are still alive, and 58 between grandchildren and great-grandchildren, few people and some family members were admitted, including the great-grandson Danny Catalano who took care of the details of the party and organized the anti-covid protection measures. Nonna Marietta has not yet been vaccinated because she is considered a very fragile subject even if she is in good health. (HANDLE).
