Provincial councilor De Bon: “It is the confirmation of an important and probably expanding presence”
BELLUNO. Last fall the vocal recording of a family with puppies. Now a photograph of a specimen, in broad daylight. The presence of the golden jackal in Comelico is confirmed, an animal that enriches the biodiversity of Belluno’s wildlife.
The proof comes from a camera trap, one of the many installed by the Province on behalf of the Veneto Region, as part of the monitoring of the wolf. In the periodic control of the images, the photograph of the golden jackal also emerged, immortalized in the Comelico woods on April 23, just before 7.30 in the morning.
«The image analyzed by the faunist experts of the Provincial Police confirms that it is a golden jackal, even if it is impossible to establish whether it is a male or female specimen – comments the managing director for wildlife management, Franco De Bon -. It is an important finding, which comes a few months after the registration of the howling of two adult specimens that recall the young. It means that the golden jackal not only reproduced, but remained in Comelico. And this could mean an expansion of the species in our territory. This would be a particularly significant figure for the richness of the biodiversity of our province. The golden jackal, in fact, is both a predator and a scavenger, so it is of strategic importance in the fauna balance of our areas ».
