In 2019 the photographer Mattia Marzorati started the project The land of holes, a survey carried out in the southern part of the province of Brescia, which is one of the most industrialized areas in Italy and also one of the most polluted. ā€œ’Land of holes’ is the definition coined by some activists. It all started with the historic presence in the area of ā€‹ā€‹gravel, sand and marble quarries. In the last fifty years these quarries have been filled with waste from all over Italy and then covered. The mounds of earth and grass that can be seen try to hide, or camouflage, what is underneath ā€, explains the photographer.

In his work, shot entirely on film, Marzorati photographed the effects of pollution on the environment and on people’s health: pollution of the air, groundwater, radioactive waste. “The land is poisonous, the fields and rivers are contaminated, children in many schools are forbidden to play on the grass,” he says.

Marzorati’s project has become a book published by Seipersei which will be available in presale starting from 1 October. The photographic project will be screened at the Internazionale festival in Ferrara on October 2nd.
