When the notes of the song-prayer Lord of the Peaks filled the church of San Gottardo, reaching the dozens of people present in the churchyard, even those who until then had managed to hold back tears burst into tears. Too great the pain of losing Federico Deluisa, the 41-year-old ski mountaineer who died on Friday in the northeast gorge of Jôf Fuart, overwhelmed by an avalanche.
Many wanted to say goodbye to him for the last time, huddling around his mother Loretta, his father Luigi, and his girlfriend Anny. There were the closest family and friends ever, work colleagues and companions of many excursions. There was also Andrea Polo, the third member of the small group formed by Federico Deluisa e Carlo Picotti, the only one left unscathed from the Jôf Fuart gully.

He wanted to be there to accompany Federico on his last journey, taking the coffin, together with other friends, to church. He was able to grasp the beauty of life even in the simplest things that surrounded him. A bond, that of Federico for the mountains, which was very strong. Freud-style engineer by profession, as soon as he could he took his skis and backpack and headed for a peak. On Friday 16 April, together with Carlo and Andrea, he had chosen the northeast gorge of the Jôf Fuart. A very demanding route, which represented a dream for all three. But fate was there waiting for them, ready to take the lives of Deluisa and Picotti.
It was only Polo who saved himself from the avalanche, who from now on will always carry the memory of his two friends up high. “The mountain gives a lot, but it takes a lot away,” he said immediately after the accident. A thought shared by many outside the church of San Gottardo, where Federico still imagined himself among his beloved mountains. “God of heaven.
