Meanwhile, thousands of people have left Goma
(ANSA) – GOMA, MAY 23 – The lava flow that descended on the slopes of the Nyiragongo volcano, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has stopped on the outskirts of the city of Goma. The flow interrupted its progression during the night to stop in the north-eastern outskirts of the city. From the lava river, blackish and always unstable, however, fire and strong fumes continue to emanate.
Meanwhile, thousands of people fled after the eruption.
Even before the official announcement, people had started filling the streets and taking away what they could as they made their way out of the city, where the last major eruption killed 100 people. (HANDLE).
