Mathematics becomes ‘smart’ and creative and puts new learning techniques in line to motivate students through an intuitive and effective approach aimed at fruition. On 12 March 2021 the 2nd class I – Hippocrates of the “Giovanni Meli” International State High School in Palermo was awarded the prize of the video section (high schools) of the national mathematical competition “Pi Greek and the irrationals”, organized by the Effediesse Laboratory of the Politecnico di Milano on the occasion of PiDay 2021, which was attended by 89 teams from all over Italy.

In the video clip presented at the competition, conceived and edited by five students of the school, led by Professor Massimo Panzica, professor of Mathematics and Physics, a small representation was staged with the aim of showing, in a sequence developed in an original and creative way , how it is possible to obtain a good estimate of pi in everyday situations apparently very far from the imaginary mathematical world made up of cold rules and abstractions.

The proposed case shows in the example the effect obtained by overturning paper clips on the floor.

From the practical everyday life that contains elements that we are not used to considering to the practical dynamics that become objects of study and demonstration, the new techniques shorten the distance between a theoretical dimension and the practical reflection of learning.

During the award ceremony, the jury in fact underlined how the winning team had “grasped the spirit of the event and the correct way to approach mathematics at school”.
