In 1959 Paolo Di Paolo was 34 years old and is a photojournalist for the magazine Il Mondo. Pier Paolo Pasolini is 37 and is a writer already known for The best youth, Life boys e A violent life, but has not yet embarked on a film career. Italy has left the war behind and is enjoying the economic miracle.

The photographer and the writer find themselves working together thanks to Arturo Tofanelli, director of the monthly Successo and the weekly Tempo, who offers him a report on the summer holidays of Italians. The project is to start from Ventimiglia and travel along the coasts to the south and then go up towards Trieste. Immediately the two understand that they have different visions, as Di Paolo recalls: “Pasolini was looking for a lost world, of literary ghosts, an Italy that no longer existed, while I was looking for a country that looked to the future”. Even the title, conceived by the photographer, reflects his idea of reportage: The long sandy road, to indicate the effort and commitment of Italians to achieve well-being.

Despite the differences, this story through texts and images sees the light on Success, divided into three episodes. Now The long sandy road is exhibited at the gallery of the Sozzani Foundation in Milan, while in the Bulgari space in via Montenapoleone there is another exhibition that collects the shots made by Di Paolo in Milan between 1956 and 1962. Both exhibitions will remain open until 29 August.
