According to comprehensive media reports, at about 10 am on July 30, the “wives and corpses burned” in Nicheng Town, Pudong New District, Shanghai, was formally sentenced in Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate Court. Yan Haojie was sentenced to death for the crime of intentional homicide and arson.
According to the judgment, the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate Court stated that Yan Haojie and the victim Ms. Liu were newly married couples and asked Ms. Liu for money to repay the debt because of their gambling debts. Ms. Liu refused to pay because the money was going to Yan’s father. It was necessary for medical treatment, so Ms. Liu had no fault in this case. After severely killing the newlyweds, not only did they have no awareness of the seriousness of the consequences of their actions and the subjective willingness to repent, they also set fire to the house, endangering public safety, and posing great personal danger. Therefore, his surrender behavior is not enough to give him a lighter punishment.
In the end, the defendant Yan Haojie was convicted of intentional homicide and sentenced to death; convicted of arson, sentenced to eight years in prison, and decided to execute the death sentence together.
After the sentence was pronounced, the parents of the victim, Ms. Liu, said that this sentence was their expectation, and they would go to the tomb to inform their daughter of the result to comfort her spirit in the sky.
Earlier, it was reported that at 8 o’clock on March 20, 2020, Yan Haojie, who had just been married for three months, drove to the residence of his wife, Ms. Liu, and asked his wife for money in the bedroom on the second floor to pay off his gambling debts. Yan Haojie was rejected by his wife. Going to the kitchen to get a fruit knife and return to the bedroom, he used a knife threat and other methods to ask for money from his wife again. After being rejected, he stabbed his wife in the neck continuously with a knife and died.
Later, Yan Haojie used a lighter to ignite the bedroom objects to create the illusion of a fire.
According to Yan Haojie’s confession, his newly married wife had a gift money in hand. On the day of the incident, he asked his wife for 250,000 yuan (RMB, the same below), which he planned to use to pay off gambling debts.
Yan Haojie recalled that Ms. Liu was very angry when she learned that he was gambling outside, “not giving me anything.”
“She said that if this money is used to pay off gambling debts, what will your father do? Your father will also spend money to see a doctor.” Yan Haojie said that at that time, his father had been diagnosed with cancer.
Ms. Liu’s mother, Ms. Qu, said that her daughter was burned horribly, and her lower body was almost gone. There was a fruit knife on her body when the body was found.
