The family of Tatiana Tulissi asked this, the 36-year-old who was killed on 11 November 2008 by three gunshots in the villa where she lived with Paolo Calligaris, whom the Trieste Court of Assizes of Appeal on Friday acquitted with full formula, not to having committed the fact, overturning the first degree judgment with which he was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the murder of his partner.
Because after 13 years, Tati’s killer has neither a name nor a face. «And it’s too long – says brother Marco Tulissi – that we wait to know what the truth is. It is a suffering that is renewed every day. Every morning, every evening our thoughts go to Tatiana. And now we ask ourselves: who killed her? Who did it? They must explain to us what caused the first-degree sentence that had been clear-cut to be overturned, they must tell us what was considered so evident and why we went from white to black. We just want clarity ».
It was hard to listen to the reading of the device in the classroom, Marco admits. “We were left bad, we did not expect it and inevitably this is a suffering that is renewed again”, he adds.
Even Tatiana’s mother, Meri Conchione, does not hide the pain she felt. «This sentence surprised us all – he says – and it hurts us because it is as if we had to start all over again, once again. It is useless to deny that we have experienced a great disappointment. Now we trust in the judgment of the Supreme Court ». These have been long years. “Years in which we family members have fought to find the truth – continues Meri – and in which often, in our battle, we have felt alone and abandoned, years in which I lost my husband for whom Tatiana’s death was a hard blow, years of great suffering. Knowing who harmed my daughter will not make me hug her again but we want to give a name to those who took her away from us forever ».
A sentence that has also left the lawyer of the Tulissi family perplexed, Laura Luzzatto Guerrini who represents, in addition to her brother Marco and her mother Meri, also her sister Marzia. «Any perplexity will be dispelled by the reading of the sentence, therefore any evaluation will be posterior – he declares -. For us, the first instance sentence had identified the guilt of Paolo Calligaris. On Friday, the Trieste Court of Assizes of Appeal instead stated that he is not guilty. My clients were aware from the beginning that the process has its own process that must be followed and that we must wait for the third degree of judgment in the Supreme Court where it was inevitable that this process would have landed. Of course, it is not easy for my clients because it has been a process that has lasted for many years ».
