FLORENCE – Angelo Di Leo, oncologist considered among the leading experts in breast cancer, died at the age of 58 in Prato, the first Italian to win, in 2019, the Esmo Lifetime Achievement Award, recognition attributed by the European Society of Oncological Medicine, for his career dedicated to the research and training of young people. Originally from Palermo, Di Leo had been working at the Prato hospital since 2003.

Having graduated in the Sicilian capital in 1988, specializing in medical oncology in Pavia, Di Leo had carried out his internship at the Cancer Institute of Milan. In 1996 he went to work in the medical oncology division of the Jules Bordet Institute in Brussels, where since 2000 he had held the position of associate director and medical director of the Breast research group.

In 2003 he returned to Italy, in Prato, as director of oncology at the Santo Stefano hospital. Last April he left his position to take on the role of coordinator of the health company for the development of programs for clinical research.

Condolence for Di Leo’s death was expressed by all the colleagues of the Tuscany Center Healthcare Company and the Prato hospital who remember him as a “great professional, for years an important point of reference for research in the oncological field. a human and professional void ». The CEO of the Local Health Authority, Paolo Morello Marchese, also recalls how he was always «attentive to the care, research and development of young collaborators. We have built together a reality of excellence, pride of Prato, which we will continue to maintain and develop ».

Condolence was also expressed by the mayor of Prato Matteo Biffoni who remembers him as a «point of reference for medicine, he has dedicated all his energies to cancer treatments and research. Together with the Pitigliani Foundation he laid the foundations for the birth of an oncology center in Prato ».
