At 0:10 on February 21, 2022, as the last ship sailed out of the lock room, the planned suspension and maintenance of the ship lock on the South Line of the Three Gorges in 2022 was officially launched. The Three Gorges double-line five-level ship lock is an important control channel for shipping on the Yangtze River. In order to further improve the status of equipment and facilities, the Three Gorges Group Watershed Management Center plans to implement a planned shutdown and maintenance every two years, and the two lines will be carried out alternately.

The planned construction period of this maintenance is 30 days. During this period, the ship lock of the Three Gorges North Line will be operated in a single line and will be reversed regularly. It is understood that the Three Gorges double-line five-level ship lock is currently the world‘s largest inland ship lock with the largest number of consecutive stages, the highest water head and the most complex operating conditions. In 2021, the cumulative freight volume through the gate will reach a new record high, and the two-way freight volume will exceed 100 million tons for 8 consecutive years. Since it was put into operation, it has continued to operate safely, stably and efficiently for nearly 19 years, with a cumulative freight volume of 1.7 billion tons, providing a strong guarantee for economic and social development and people’s livelihood needs.
